Attendance Allowance is for people over State Pension age who need help or supervision because of a health condition. Almost any condition can count: arthritis, heart problems, breathlessness, dementia, Parkinson's, poor eyesight, anxiety.
Aged 66 or overState Pension age or above, living in England or Wales.
Need help with personal careWashing, dressing, medication, moving about safely, or someone keeping an eye on you.
For 6 months or moreThe difficulties have been there for at least six months (different rules apply if terminally ill).

Being straight with you
You can claim Attendance Allowance yourself for free. Citizens Advice and Age UK offer free help with the form, and the DWP helpline (0800 731 0122) will post you one.

Common questions
The things people usually ask us first.
Will my savings or pension stop me getting it?
No. Attendance Allowance is not means-tested. Your income, savings and home make no difference at all, and it's tax-free.
I manage, mostly. Is it still worth applying?
Often, yes. "Managing" slowly, painfully, or dangerously still counts as needing help. The claim is about the help you need, even if nobody currently provides it.
Can I do this for my mum or dad?
Yes — many of our calls are with a son or daughter, with mum or dad joining in on speakerphone. The claimant signs the finished form.
Will it affect my other benefits?
It doesn't reduce them — and being awarded Attendance Allowance can actually increase Pension Credit, Housing Benefit or Council Tax support.
What if I live in Scotland or Northern Ireland?
Scotland now uses Pension Age Disability Payment and Northern Ireland has its own process, so our service currently covers England and Wales. We'll happily point you to the right place.
